They call Iceland the land of “fire and ice,” and these volcanic rocks are a testament to that rugged beauty and the ferocity of the elements. We found these stones in the vicinity of Landmannalaugar after a thrilling drive through rivers and streams that culminated with one of the most beautiful hikes we’ve ever experienced.

Stones like this are actually quite common in Iceland, but Iceland itself is anything but common. There’s a reason they shoot movie scenes of the moon in Iceland, and why NASA tests its gear in the volcanic lava fields. Iceland is a world of its own; per capita, Iceland has more writers, more books read and published than anywhere else on earth. The country is full of contrasts and extremes. As we learned, the weather can change almost instantly, and there’s something about the rainstorms in Iceland that feel far more intense than rain in other countries.

In contrast to the natural world, the people are kind and welcoming, and during the bright summer months the locals are absolutely ecstatic. Because of their volcanic origins, these stones are pitch black, much lighter in weight than they appear, and occasionally sharp along the edges.
