SPAIN GRIT ROCK #1
This is the original batch of Grit Rocks, collected from the donkey pen where we built our van Ody. (Don’t worry, I washed them well!) They are soft to the touch and feel almost clay-like, but rough and jagged looking. The van build will forever be a story of grit and perseverance. Life in the cottage was so beautiful, but also challenging. Days felt like they were lived at a higher frequency and intensity on top of that mountain.
Without any real source of heat besides a fireplace, we spent our time inside the cottage living in our winter-rated sleeping bags, with hats, gloves, and thermals on at all times until the early days of summer. We collected firewood every night on top of the mountain and made a ritual of nightly dinners in front of a roaring fire. When it rained for a month straight, we almost lost hope in completing our project. The fire wouldn’t start so we had no heat, and when we did manage to get it going, the wet wood made the entire room smell of wild boars—since they would dig themselves into the wood piles at the top of the mountain.
All the while, we worked on the van build from sunrise to sunset, and after a whole day’s work of manual labor, Lou edited videos late into the night to support our young and struggling YouTube channel, before waking up the next day to start all over again. These challenges made us stronger as a couple, and more resilient.
We learned how to use power tools, how to demolish, re-paint, fiberglass, insulate, wire, and build out an entire van. We made friends with Alfie, the German Shepherd on the property, and spent hours throwing pine cones down the hill for him. These rocks are a reminder that you can teach yourself anything you set your mind to, that your beliefs become your reality, and that showing up every day and chipping away at a mountain of a project will eventually get you where you want to be.
